St Georges Open Day 1 & 2 Review

Some top quality bowlers got through the first weekend of the St Georges Open. Champion of Champion John Bailey got through as he looks to be able to retain his title, defeating Steve Shaw 16. Steve’s Dudley Dell team mate Nathan Dawes got through though after beating Wayne Rogers 17. There were two 20 qualifying games on the Saturday morning as Jason Galvin beat Mike Beer and Mike’s Castlefields team mate Adam Jones defeated Andy Hamman. Another Castlefields player got through in the afternoon as Andy Duckett got past Matthew Allen 17, while former St Georges player Tom Roden got past Dave McDermott 10 to qualify. Felix Abba and Steve Gilfedder were surprise qualifiers who had impressive wins over Ivan Smout 7 and James Seville 16 respectively to qualify.

On Sunday and another couple of former homesters qualified with Josh Bradburn beating Matty Stewart 16 and Scott Harries defeating Martin Gaut 14. Nigel Hughes beat Wayne Usher 16 and Chris Eccles got past Chris Marshman 12 for the other morning qualifiers. Into the afternoon and last year’s Champion of Champion runner up Kevan Shaw qualified after defeating David Gwilliam 10, while other big competition winners also got through. Wayne Ditchfield beat Tony Freeth 5, Steve Freer defeated Danny Edkins 9 and Chris Ward got past former Isle of Man winner Leighton Roberts 9.
