Thongsbridge and Ashton got through the 1st week of qualifying at the BCGBA World Club Championships. Former winners Thongsbridge beat the Grapes to qualify by 22, with Jack Dyson the best of their 5 winners. They had defeated Westhoughton S&SC by just 3 chalks in their first game, despite having 6 winners, the best of them being Craig Gant and Jon Sneddon 16. The Grapes had defeated Sir John Bayley by 25 first game, with Dean Ferris producing the top card with an 8 win.
Ashton got past Parkfield Labour in a thrilling first round tie, by one chalk. They only had three winners, but Ashton’s Dan Seddan won 12 last on to get them home. In the qualifier they defeated Levens by 19, Neil Grant’s 4 win at number one proving the main difference between the two sides. Levens had beaten Haunchwood first round by 7, with Mark Ashburn’s 4 win their best.
